Garmin Forerunner GPS sport watches

Garmin provides several GPS-enabled watches that are excellent for half marathon training.  These watches offer the most accurate distance measurement in the GPS watch universe, which isn’t surprising coming from a company that made its name selling GPS navigation devices for cars before getting into the watch business. Garmin GPS watches are also easy to use, competitively priced and loaded with useful training features. We like the Forerunner 305, the Forerunner 405 and the Forerunner 610 in particular, and discuss them further below.

The Garmin Forerunner 305 provides the most accurate distance measurement in the GPS watch universe. The Forerunner 305 records time, distance, pace, speed, calories burned and laps completed in your workouts. It provides vibration alerts, which make the watch buzz on your wrist at a certain distance, amount of calories burned, time, heart rate or cadence. These are very useful for runners who work out while listening to music. It has many other useful capabilities, including wireless heart rate monitoring (when purchased with the optional heart rate monitor), a rechargeable battery and USB connectivity to upload your workout information to your computer for analysis. Perhaps most importantly, it’s incredibly easy to use – even with all those features. The only negative comment we have relates to its size – it’s larger than a typical sport wristwatch, and also a bit boxy. With that said, its performance is sufficiently outstanding that we think that objections to its design are largely irrelevant. If you prefer a more compact watch design, then consider the Forerunner 405 or Forerunner 610.

The Garmin Forerunner 405 has everything that the Forerunner 305 has and it comes in a more compact and attractive form factor. It monitors time, distance, pace, calories and heart rate (when purchased with the optional heart rate monitor). The watch’s bezel is touch-sensitive, which enables easy navigation between watch features. The watch comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The Forerunner 405 can also wirelessly connect to your computer to upload your training data after your workout. You can then view a map of your route and analyze your training data through Garmin’s online training community (Garmin Connect) or the Garmin Training Center software. You can also wirelessly share your data and workouts with other Forerunner 405 users.
